Food aid and trade
Food is an essential part of survival and wellbeing. In addition, a variety of nutritious foods is essential to maintain health and survival. Without sufficient, nutritious and affordable food, families and whole communities are affected, which makes food security a crucial issue for humankind. |

Subsistence agriculture
When we talk about subsistence agriculture, we are referring to produce which is grown and consumed by farmers and their families. The amount of produce is not enough to provide a surplus to sell. This is most commonly practised through shifting agriculture, often referred to as ‘slash-and-burn’ farming, as illustrated in the images on the right. Fire is used because it benefits the growth of plants and is an easy clearing method. Once a section of the forest has been used, it is left to regenerate, if possible, for about 25 years. |
