You are nominated by the Cairns Regional Council to identify and explain the geographical patterns that make Cairns at risk from Dengue Fever. Furthermore, your job is to evaluate two strategies and to decide which one is the most feasible for immediate implementation in the Cairns region in order to reduce the risk and spread of Dengue Fever.
The strategies you have to decide about are to: 1. Implement an educational program to raise community awareness. The purpose of this program is to:
Raise public awareness of the risk to public health
Reduce the number of breeding sites for the mosquito through advertisements, greater community information/ awareness.
2. Implement a mosquito breeding program. The purpose is to:
Introduce Wolbachia to disrupt dengue transmission to people
Note: These strategies should be evaluated using the following criteria:
Criterion 1: Will the strategy reduce the level of risk to the residents and visitors of Cairns? Criterion 2: Will the strategy be financially viable for the Cairns community in the long run? Criterion 3: Will the strategy be environmentally effective and efficient, especially in consideration to our changing climate?
